In 2014 a small band of people from Southern, Northern and Central California came together to oppose an initiative to split California up into tiny states. They highlighted the fact that California was losing being part of the USA and that California has the economic and cultural power to survive alone. The movement grew from there to 10,000 members on social media throughout 2015. In 2016, Donald Trump was elected president and the movement expanded to 40,000 + people on social media, and around 180,000 people on email. Although Trump lost re-election, other destabilizing events came out of Washington DC, and with each event, interest in Calexit continued to grow. It is an idea that can not die. In 2014, when the Calexit movement protested in front of the Sacramento capitol and called California a “nation state” we were laughed at by government officials walking to their job. Now, the governor of California, (like the governor before him) routinely calls California a “Nation State”. The reasons why California loses being part of America, have not changed since 2014. To prove this we offer our policy guide from 2015 and our revised policy guide (produced almost 10 years later) in 2024. Both of them together show that the pressures on California to leave, and the opportunities that exist once we are independent, are still there.
